“It’s heartwarming to find that people will put their pets’ needs first, even when it comes to one of the biggest financial decisions they will ever make,” said Nate Johnson, chief marketing officer for realtor.com®. “This survey shows that we really do consider pets part of the family — and that their needs are a critical part of finding the perfect home.”

The online survey of more than 1,000 people who closed on a home in 2018 was conducted in July by Harris Research. Among the 1000 survied more than 80 percent reported owning pets. Dogs at 64% took top spot, followed by cats, birds, fish and other pets. Youthful buyers seemed more likely to be owners with 89% of 18-34 year olds holding the top spot. People with kids were more likely to own pets as well. Home buyers will skip dream home if it isn’t right for pets.

Even higher ratings went to those with birds, horses, rodents and reptiles. Interesting that with rodents and reptiles, home buyers will skip dream home if it isn’t right for pets.

Pass up on the dream home if it does not include the pets

Of the pet owners surveyed, 75 percent would pass up an otherwise-perfect home if it did not meet their pet’s needs. Younger buyers were the largest demographic saying they would pass up the perfect pad at 79 percent. The next largest group came in at 77 percent with 35-54 year olds. But those with fish and reptiles had similar numbers saying they too would pass on a house that did not meet their expectations with their pets.

What was most important to pet owners?

Fish were asked if they wanted a large yard, seriously, dog owners wanted the large yard. Followed by outdoor space, a garage, large square footage, a dog run, sturdy flooring and close proximity to outdoor spaces. At Happy Hound Dog Resorts, we see most of our owners as in charge of the House, the kids and the pets, so this makes sense. Pets are important to parents, with kids away at school, the parents need someone to take care of during the day. A big empty house is lonely, so pets help fill the emptiness.
