We have a lot of dogs in our care so we hear a lot of barking. We only work with dogs and do not sell dogs. Most of the barking you hear is of excited dogs on our daycare floor or in their kennels. We have talked about how much dogs have grown to need and work with humans. We can learn a lot from our four legged friends. Most of the barking is playful and energetic. Sometimes we see dogs barking that is misdirected. Issues of when the dog was growing up and needed some training to correct bad behavior. We can work with a dog to educate the dog on when to bark and when to hush. There are a few thoughts to the process.
Dogs Barking
Dr. Ian Dunbar, is one of the foremost experts in dog behavior and operates the Dog Star Daily blog. Dr. Dunbar is the person who helped start the Association of Professional Dog Trainers curriculum, APDT and has created a widely recognized Sirius Training program for puppies where many behaviors are worked on so that the owners and dogs know what to do and work on throughout the life of the dog. Dr. Dunbar believes it is best to work on the “woof” and the “shush” with a dog. He knows you cannot stop dogs barking. But you can work with a dog to correct when you want the dog to bark. Working with the dog to Woof on command is all about training the dog to bark on command. Woof when a stranger is approaching the door, command “Woof”, then reward with a treat. Alternatively, to say “Shush” when you want the exact opposite. The best place to practice dogs barking is in the comfort of your home. A place where you can control the environment and the noises.

Others believe that the best way to control barking is through distraction. Dogs are going to bark but if there is something that is more appealing to your dog, then you are onto something. Dogs have needs. When the need to eat is greater than the need to bark at some noise over there, you can control the dog and the situation. All you can do with any corrective issue is to practice, practice, practice. This will not be an overnight sensation. But with time, you can correct behavior and have a positive desired outcome. Dogs barking can be a thing of the past.
